We commemorate and encourage the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of African Americans in history and our society.
The 2026 Black History Month theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations, highlights the enduring legacy and transformative power of honoring Black history over the past one hundred years. The theme centers on the vision of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the founders of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASALH), whose efforts institutionalized the study, preservation, and celebration of Black life, culture, and achievement. From the establishment of Negro History Week to the global observance of Black History Month, these commemorations have shaped how Black people understand their past and assert their place in the present and future.
“A Century of Black History Commemorations” encourages reflection on how collective remembrance, through education, public celebrations, cultural institutions, and community traditions, has challenged historical erasure, strengthened cultural identity, and advanced struggles for freedom, equality, and justice across the African diaspora. As efforts to limit or silence Black history persist in the modern era, these commemorations remain vital acts of truth-telling, resistance, and empowerment. From February 1st to the 28th, we honor one hundred years of preserving Black history and reaffirm its essential role in shaping a more just and informed society.
The Black History Month events are made possible by the support of the Newman Center Trust Fund.
