Internal Scholarships

These scholarships can be found on Academic Works and will open in October or January. Students are encouraged to apply first to a faculty-led study abroad program and then to a scholarship. Please contact International Education at inthelp@fitchburgstate.edu with any questions

Center for Italian Culture (CIC) Scholarship

This scholarship is aids those who wish to study abroad in Italy. This scholarship aids faculty-led programs as well as semester/summer programs in Italy. 

In order to be considered for a scholarship from the Center for Italian Culture, students must be matriculated at Fitchburg State University.

The application for the CIC scholarship can be found on Academic Works. Please submit an essay which must include the following:

  • The reason for applying (to study abroad, for tuition, or other)
  • If you are studying in Verona, or, if not, where will you be studying
  • The course(s) that you intend to register for that will be supported by this award
  • Courses previously or currently studied at the University level in Western Civilization, Art, Languages, Customs, etc.
  • How this travel/study will enhance your future student will take on campus, abroad or at another institution
  • Number of hours typically worked during the school year, and during the summer

No application will be accepted after the deadline.

Global Ambassador Scholarship

This scholarship is for Fitchburg State University students who are applying to ANY faculty-led program run by Fitchburg State University in ANY country except for Italy. 

Students should apply for the Global Ambassador Scholarship through Academic Works. Applications open in October. 

One of the largest endowed gifts ever received by Fitchburg State University will create the Global Ambassadors Scholarship Program, opening doors for students to travel abroad for experiential learning opportunities.

Through the leadership of Anna M. Clementi and the Clementi Family Charitable Trust, $1 million has been raised to support the new scholarship program.

When fully implemented, the fund is designed to boost the number of students in our faculty-led international programs by 30 percent over its first six years.

When fully implemented, the Global Ambassadors Scholarship Program will cover 50 percent of the costs for students to attend Fitchburg State’s faculty-led international trips. Students will apply for the scholarship with the endorsement of faculty, and will be limited to sophomore, junior and senior class students and will target recruiting first-generation students and students with no previous international travel experience.

Students from all majors and programs will be eligible.

Zimmerman Irish Scholarship

The Ann Hyland Zimmerman Irish Culture Endowment was established by Ann Hyland Zimmerman, class of 1938, with the goal of perpetuating the Irish culture that was so vibrant in Fitchburg in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The scholarship is awarded to students studying abroad in Ireland.The purpose of this fund is to promote an understanding and appreciation of Irish history, arts and culture at Fitchburg State. This can be accomplished by, but not limited to, different activities that promote Irish Culture. 

Students interested in studying abroad in Ireland for the semester should apply to the Zimmerman Irish Cultural Scholarship. Please email inthelp@fitchburgstate.edu for more information.

90% of students who participate in Fitchburg State's faculty-led programs have received either the CIC or Global Ambassador Scholarship funding.

External Scholarships

  • Fund for Education Abroad
    The Fund for Education Abroad provides scholarships of up to $10,000 and ongoing support to minority and first-generation college students.
  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
    If you qualify for the Pell Grant, you qualify for a Gilman.
  • Fulbright US Student Program
    The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs, for recent graduates.
  • AASCU-Designated Chinese Government Scholarship - These scholarships are specifically for American undergraduate students attending AASCU member colleges and universities who wish to study at a Chinese university for the 2024-25 academic year. They are designed to sponsor students interested in short-term or long-term study at over 250+ designated universities.
  • Boren Awards for International Study
    This scholarship helps to fund study abroad in specific countries, for students interested in public service at the federal level (list of preferences).
  • American Scandinavian Foundation
    For study in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden.
  • Critical Language Scholarship
    The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
  • NIAF Scholarship
  • Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao offers a number of outbound scholarships and grants for New Zealand students and academics who wish to study or conduct research overseas.
