To the campus community,
This is an update about the incident that was shared with the campus earlier this week.
Last Saturday night, a student’s report of a sexual assault initiated a comprehensive criminal investigation by University Police. Based on the information that was immediately available, the campus community was informed of the incident the following morning. Such timely warnings may be made prior to a thorough investigation, in an effort to keep our community informed regarding potential safety risks.
Within a day of the initial report, and with valued assistance from the City of Fitchburg Police Department, a person of interest in this incident was identified. The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office was also consulted during the investigation.
Based on information developed throughout the course of the investigation, it was determined today that no criminal charges will be filed in this case and the matter is considered resolved.
We can also state that there is no ongoing threat to the campus related to this incident.
To protect student privacy and confidentiality, and to preserve the integrity of our systems for investigating reports of sexual assault, the university will not be issuing additional details about this matter or the ensuing investigation.
Fitchburg State takes every report of sexual assault seriously, and encourages survivors to step forward with the assurance they will be heard, and their safety and welfare will always be a priority.
