Upward Bound is a year round, college preparatory program (TRIO) funded by the Department of Education and sponsored by Fitchburg State University since 1989. The program stresses academic development, serving 87 high school students from Fitchburg and Leominster for the duration of their high school career and beyond. Eligibility is based on first generation college status, family income and academic motivation.
We provide academic support through tutoring services, educational and college preparatory workshops, and cultural field trips. Program participants have access to many of our resources and facilities.
Admission
Admission to the Upward Bound Program is on a rolling basis, dependent on openings. For more information, students can contact their school guidance counselor or the Upward Bound Program at Fitchburg State University (978.665.3439).
Our Upward Bound program serves students from Leominster High School, Fitchburg High School, Sizer School, and Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School.
Upward Bound is a TRIO program. Learn more about TRIO programs on the Council for Opportunity in Education website.
Upward Bound Fall Academy
Students are expected to attend Upward Bound Fall Academy during the school year. The sessions offer workshops in English, Math, Science, and test preparation; and an opportunity to receive tutoring assistance from our staffed university tutors. All sessions are held on the Fitchburg State University campus in the Thompson Building. Guests are welcome to attend.
Summer Residential Program
All Upward Bound students are eligible to attend the Program's 6-week summer residential program. The program gives students an opportunity to live on the Fitchburg State University campus and experience life as a college student. Students attend academic classes in the morning, participate in community service worksites in the afternoon, are engaged in a variety of entertaining workshops in the evening and have the option of attending college visits and cultural trips on the weekend. The program is FREE to all Upward Bound students.
