Sponsored by Fitchburg State University since 1989, Upward Bound (TRIO) provides intensive academic support and college advising to increase access to the postsecondary education system for all participants and parents/guardians who have been limited from attending higher education institutions. Serving ninety-one (91) potential first-generation college students from Fitchburg and Leominster, many of whom face significant economic barriers, the Fitchburg State Upward Bound program services promote active learning, provide educational mentorship, and stimulate college and career exploration. College visits, cultural events, and community service learning activities aim to foster independence, confidence, and an appreciation for diversity. Upward Bound’s holistic approach empowers the next generation of global leaders with the skills and resiliency to succeed in postsecondary education and beyond.
