"The program schedule was flexible, which allowed me to work full time and I was able to develop projects that were implemented in my job as a Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer."

"I decided to start my masters program over 20 years after graduating with my BA (and I had never planned to go back to school). It took me a while to get into the habit of doing homework again and my papers were definitely more conversational than academic. However, the Applied Communications program allowed me to pull from personal experience and relate it to what we were learning. I enjoyed my classes and you could feel how excited the professors were about what they were teaching. I am the Director of Alumni Relations here at Fitchburg State University. My job is to communicate with our alumni and electronic and social media are my primary mediums. I use my degree everyday. If you already have a job where communicating is a primary requirement or are looking for a job that requires being able to communicate in different ways, this program provides you with the groundwork to succeed.

Requirements and Curriculum

The 36-credit online MS in Communication and Social Media offers a unique curriculum developed to give marketing and communication professionals the tools to execute social media strategies. Students discover how to connect with and engage a target audience, all while authentically driving the brand narrative.

Social media communication is an ever-evolving field, so students in our program learn to critically conceptualize social media within historical and social contexts. This empowers them with a comprehensive knowledge of digital transformations over time and the expertise to lead effectively in periods of rapid change.

By identifying and assessing the ethical use of social media, students build informed judgments about their work and the projects they will complete for future clients. The collection, analysis, and contextualization of research findings can also help students make data-based decisions that drive intended outcomes.

The Social Media master’s degree program culminates in a capstone course, during which students conceive, propose, design, and then incrementally produce a term-length project with (or within) an organization, a community, or perhaps even a social movement.
