Interrogating the Implicit Bias of AI: Teaching Educators to Use Critical Literacy to Complicate and Contextualize the Myths of Columbus

with Dr. Katharine Covino (English Studies), Ms. Renée Fratantonio (Library), and Dr. Lyndsey Benharris (Stonehill College)

Across the US, elementary-school teachers are required to present national holidays, such as Columbus Day. Tasked with finding educational resources, educators use search engines and generative AI, often unaware of implicit biases lurking within such systems.

Building from years of research, this session will discuss the implications of generative AI on teaching materials and model best practices for educators interested in applying critical literacy to their search for curricular materials.
