Banned Books Week Program
The Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library invites the Fitchburg State community, as well as the public, to join us in a celebration of the freedom to read through our Banned Book Week celebration from Sept. 22-28.
Every year since 1982, libraries across the country celebrate the freedom to read with Banned Books Week. Today book challenges in libraries, particularly school and public libraries, are at an all-time high according to data collected by the ALA. As such, it is more important than ever to challenge this type of censorship--Banned Book Week is an excellent occasion to do so.
This year the Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library will be hosting the following events and programs:
Monday Sep. 23, 9-10:30am
Banned Book Storytime
Join Dr. Katy Covino's Banned Book ALFA class in reading and discussing children's books that have been challenged and/or banned.
Thursday Sep. 26, 11am-12pm
Banned Books in our Public Libraries
Join us for a conversation with local area public librarians on the recent national wave of book challenges and bans in public libraries. Panelists include Muir Haman (Lunenburg Public Library), Marcia Ladd (Fitchburg Public Library), Sabrina Bonetti (Leominster Public Library), and Catherine Sebastian (Leominster Public Library), and will be moderated by Olivia Rossetti (Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library).
Sep. 22-Sep. 28
Banned Book Display
Check out a display featuring books that have all been challenged or banned in libraries and schools.
All events and programs will be held on the Library 1st Floor in Hammond Hall.
All events are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
