Constitution Day 2023 Library Guide & Book Display
"Racial Profiling and the Constitution: What Do Math, Maps, and the Law Have to Say?"
Each September, Constitution Day serves as a remembrance of the signing of our nation's founding document, as well as an opportunity to more deeply explore how this document shapes our society and lives.
This year's theme and programming for the Fitchburg State University's observation of Constitution Day, sponsored by the
General Education Program, focuses on racial profiling from various perspectives.
To help support this programming the Library has developed a guide of both Library and web-based resources that focus on various aspects and impacts of racial profiling from redlining to traffic stops. Check out the guide, as well as a schedule of events, at tiny.cc/ConstitutionDay2023
Also be sure to check out our Constitution Day-themed Banned Books and Racial Profiling book display. The selected books all share two things in common:
- They are written by Black authors and/or feature Black characters or focus on themes around race and racism.
- They have all been removed or are at risk of being removed from library shelves across the country
This display aims to point out one additional dimension of racial profiling, that of the intentional exclusion of reading materials that feature race from libraries and classrooms. The display is located in front of the elevator/stairs on the Library’s first floor.
