Join Professor Mchenga to explore the state of public health and community in beautiful Lilongwe, Malawi! Because of the food, rich traditions, hospitality and friendliness of its people, Malawi has been called the “Warm Heart of East Africa.” This course is open to all majors and counts for an AIA or IHIP elective. The program is designed to strengthen student's understanding of the issues and factors constraining the achievement of public health goals in Malawi. The impacts of social, cultural, physical, political and economic determinants of health are analyzed in a global context. Students will participate in community outreach, explore the bustling capital city, tour hospitals, and visit famous Lake Nyasa.

Students will take the class during the spring semester and travel to Malawi at the end of the semester in May for 11 days for both public health and fun cultural activities.

This program is open to all majors.

Working Itinerary (subject to change)

Day 1 Arrival and welcome dinner
Day 2 Visit Kamuzu College of Nursing and have a Panel Discussion with local health professionals 
Day 3 Take a guided City Tour of the capital, Lilongwe, and visit the Hastings Kamuzu Banda memorial; Participate in the first Community Outreach Opportunity 
Day 4 Community outreach
Day 5 Community outreach and free time
Day 6 Visit the famous, stunning Lake Nyasa! Also tour the Kungoni Museum of Culture and Art
Day 7 Classroom time and community outreach
Days 8-9 Community outreach
Day 10 Reflection and farewell dinner
Day 11 Departure
