Faculty Spotlight: Hong Yu
Hong Yu, Ph.D, grew up in Southern China and became interested in technological advancement at a young age, particularly when he read about modern-day phenomenons like computers and pizza delivery in the local newspapers during his childhood in the 70’s. Although he wasn’t particularly motivated in school early on, when he discovered his passion for computer hardware, he became extremely focused. He eventually got to work with computers hands-on and fell in love with them, and even learning how to embed the devices. This passion for technology led to him earning his BA in Electrical Engineering in China. Years later, he went on to earn both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, Yu joined the Fitchburg State University faculty in the Fall of 2018 as an Assistant Professor of Engineering Technology. While he teaches several courses in Computer Science, Engineering and Industrial Technology, he still finds time for research and writing in several categories of technological advancement including network communication protocol, embedded system IoT, VLSI design and simulation, online laboratory platform, earthquake nowcast, EEG for brain computer interface, and robotic implementation.
In 2012, he published the book A Protocol for Multimedia Transmission Over Wireless Networks. He has published numerous articles in major magazines, including “A Multiple Access Protocol for Multimedia Transmission over 5G Wireless synchronous Transfer Mode Network”, which appeared in IEEE Xplore magazine earlier this year. Yu has won numerous awards for his work as a professor, researcher, and reviewer. He was recently presented with the Certificate of Appreciation for his contributions as a reviewer at the 2021 EEEI 12th Annual Information Technology, Electronics and Mobile Communication Conference.
Not only has he accomplished so much in his field, he also finds the time and energy to inspire and mentor others as well during the pandemic. He dedicated his role as an advisor at FSU, and many of his own students have gone on to have very successful careers in engineering. He also finds time to work as a judge for the FIRST LEGO League, USA, IEEE Robotic Challenge, and the Worcester Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Yu lives in Leominster, MA with his wife. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, fishing and hiking, including Mount Wachusett and the Massachusetts Reservoir. He also enjoys traveling with his family, especially visiting friends in San Francisco, San Diego and Hawaii.
